Transcript of (First)

interior: two people, eating crackers with peanut butter.

1st: (chewing) did you say “what did you say?”
(pause) it seems really self-conscious sitting here with two cameras on.

2nd: (nods)

1st: you have to speak up because of the lawn mower.

2nd: (spreading peanut butter on crackers, jar is near empty)

1st: (eating)‘cause a this fucking asshole mowing his lawn

2nd: (talks over)he’s doing a nice thing he’s motoring (offers another cracker to 1st person)

1st: no thanks.

2nd: what you don’t like the way i put the peanut butter on?

1st: yeah alright..

2nd: (laughs)

1st: i think this is like acting lesson number one; don’t act with peanut butter in your mouth.

2nd: is it really?

1st: (talks over) don’t do peanut butter acting.
that is what too much peanut butter for....

2nd:(talks over) i am spreading it out amongst the other crackers. (continues laughing)

1st: who is he mowing a lawn for?

2nd: the (beep over name)

1st: I don’t know why he’s gotta fuckin mow a lawn during our movie we’re trying to make.

2nd: I don’t know. (pause) and they’re night owls.

1st: who?

2nd: the (beep over name) they’re up all night.

1st: (long pause) peeing.

2nd: is that what happens.

1st: that’s what happens to old people……they pee in the night.

2nd: really?

1st: hem-hum, they pee seven or eight times a night so during the day he’s mostly taking a nap.(pause) that’s terrible.

2nd: we were not meant to live past forty.

1st: Ok, So I am going to tell you about Hamlet now.

2nd: So, Do I get to interrupt with questions?

1st: Apparently(pause) Yeah jump right in.

2nd: (talk over) you’ve laid out no direction. How am I suppose to act without direction? Is it just improv?

1st: You’re doing great. You’re doing a great job right now. (pause) Alright, So I don’t know anything about Hamlet.

2nd: yes you do.

1st: I’ve read it once. I’ve seen it performed, and every time it’s performed it’s different.

2nd: (gesturing)But, THAT’S the beauty of it.

1st: First of all, I think Hamlet is twenty (pause)  years old.

2nd: and he’s Danish?

1st: YOU KNOW HAMLET, his dad dies.

2nd: Yeah but what about

1st: (interrupts)his dad is murdered

2nd: (finishes) gildenstern and rosencranz? are they in the story?

1st: yeah I’ll get to them. The first, (pause) Right of the bat, you learn some stuff. So, there’s this (pause) The best guy in the entire story is named Horatio. I think.

2nd: Hornblower?

1st: Horatio.

2nd: Hornblower?

1st: Are you not going to have anymore peanut butter?

2nd: hem-hum, I am just waiting.

1st: Alright, I think his name is Horatio. I’m bad with names.

2nd: Why is he the best?

1st: Because, everybody else is a douche. 

2nd: (nods)

1st: A school buddy, you learn (pause) somehow you learn like right away,that he’s a school buddy, like a college buddy of Hamlet. Who by the way is junior. they never tell you that in the movies. (pause) He’s Hamlet junior. His dads name is Hamlet too. His dads name is King Hamlet  His name is Prince Hamlet.

2nd: (nods) hem-hum. Is that first or last name?

1st: first name, I think. I thought that was pretty interesting. (pause) anyways, so here is what’s great about...

2nd: (interrupts quietly) at any point in time in the play do they say “junie”? 

1st: nope,no (amused) Junior..Junie..no

2nd: no nick names?

1st: no. no, they don’t, they just call him Hamlet. So anyways, there’s two guards, like castle guards, on the.. looking out, and it’s misty.
